UPDATED: Plaza Cafe Closes After Losing Business Registration

The Illinois Department of Revenue revoked the restaurant's registration for not paying taxes as far back as 2008, shutting down the Old Frankfort Way business.

  • UPDATE (11:45 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 26): New information from Illinois Department of Revenue.

The is closed after the Illinois Department of Revenue revoked its business registration.

The registration was pulled because the restaurant on Old Frankfort Way owes the state agency sales and employee income withholding taxes from as far back as 2008, said IDOR spokeswoman Sue Hofer. The registration was revoked Oct. 20 and served Nov. 16. The green sign currently in the window of the Plaza Cafe went up Wednesday, Jan. 25.

The state agency can't disclose the amount of taxes owed by the Plaza, which cannot operate without being registered, Hofer said. The restaurant can reopen once the back taxes are paid off or an acceptable payment plan with the agency is set up, she added.

This action usually is only taken after the department has tried to work with the business to collect the money, going as far as setting up payment plans, Hofer said.

"Our goal is to collect taxes from customers or employees and get it in the state coffers and keep them in business," she said. "But there comes a point where we have to take these types of actions."
