18th-Ranked Geneva Softball Team Starts Strong, Then Drops Double-Header

Vikings' varsity squad splits four spring break contests.

While most of their classmates were on spring break this week, the Geneva High School varsity softball team resumed its season with four games in three days. Out of action since March 19 thanks to Mother Nature, the girls needed to find some momentum.

The week started out with promise as 18th-ranked Geneva picked up back-to-back wins on Tuesday and Wednesday

At home on Tuesday against Oswego, the Vikings got a pair of hits each from Dori Rogers (Sr.), Melissa Barber (Sr.), Kirsten Searcy (So.) and Taylor Medernach (Jr.) en route to an 8-1 win. Kelly McCaffrey (Sr.) tossed five shutout innings to notch the win while Sam Kobler (Sr.) closed it out with two innings.

The same cast came up big the next night in a 6-3 comeback victory over St. Francis. Searcy and McCaffrey led the attack with three hits apiece; Searcy added two RBIs to her line as part of a five-run 6th inning. Rogers picked up two more hits in the process and Kelly McCaffrey earned her second win in as many days.

Any momentum picked up, though, disappeared on Thursday as Geneva was swept out of a doubleheader against Wheaton North. In Game 1, the Vikings were down 5-1 by the start of the fifth inning but knocked in three to pull to within 5-4. The Falcons added one more run in the sixth and that ended up being one too many, as Geneva went down by a final score of 6-5. Kelly McCaffrey took the loss.

There wasn’t much suspense in Game 2 as Wheaton put seven on the board in the fourth inning, which proved to be more than enough in the 8-1 victory. Julie Orwig (Sr.) took the loss.

Geneva is now 2-3 in 2011.
