Geneva's Ashley Santos Signs With Marquette; Vikings Beat Morgan Park 65-60

Geneva basketball star begins her senior season knowing where she'll be playing when she graduates.

Marquette University coaches knew exactly what they were doing when they signed Geneva senior Ashley Santos to a full-ride women's basektball scholarship.

Santos, who scored her 1,000th career point as a Viking on a Thursday night in early January of her junior year, signed her letter of intent on Nov. 9.

Santos joins another standout guard, Brooklyn Pumroy of Fairborn, OH, as 2012 recruits for the Golden Eagles, coached by Marquette University head women's basketball coach Terri Mitchell.

"We are thrilled to have Ashley and Brooklyn join our basketball family," said Mitchell in a story on the Marquette website. "They are versatile scorers and will add depth to our guard position. We can talk a lot about what they will give us as basketball players, but the biggest reason they are joining our family is because of their high character and the values that have been instilled in them by their families. That will continue at Marquette. They are both great young women that everyone will be excited to be around."

Santos, a 5-11 combo guard, is listed as the No. 89 overall prospect and 34th at her position by ESPN HoopGurlz. As a junior, she led her team in rebounding (5.4 rpg) and was second in scoring (15.8 ppg) while helping Geneva to the class 4A super-sectional qualifier.

"Ashley is a tenacious player with a tremendous work ethic who can score in variety of ways. That kind of passion will add to our team that already values hard work."

The versatile guard was an all-area selection by both the Daily Herald and the Kane County Chronicle and was named to the Upstate Eight River Division All-Conference Team following the 2010 and 2011 seasons. Santos earned all-tournament team honors at the Geneva Invite and was the Most Valuable Player at the Benet/Naperville North Holiday Tournament in 2010.

Santos was a member of the U-18 and U-16 Puerto Rico National Team and has played with club teams Georgia Ice and Illinois Lighting Elite Platinum.

Pumroy, a 5-7 point guard, helped Fairborn High School to a 21-3 record and an appearance in the district finals in 2011. Named to the Dabbs Miami Valley All-Area First Team in 2011, Pumroy averaged 11.9 points, 2.6 assists per game last season and led the Greater Western Ohio Conference in steals with 4.1 per game.

Marquette finished the 2010-11 season with a record of 24-9 and advanced to the second round of the NCAA tournament, where they lost to regional No. 1 seed Tennessee.
