Northern Illinois University to Host 'STEM Cafe' Event Tonight at Claddagh Irish Pub in Geneva Commons
NIU's STEM Café is traveling to Geneva to explore advancements in engineering. The event is open to the public and will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. tonight at the Claddagh Irish Pub.
NIU’s popular STEM Café is traveling to Geneva to explore new advancements in engineering and materials science.
NIU’s monthly science café will feature Michael Haji-Sheikh, associate professor of electrical engineering at NIU who will share the latest research and theories about increasing the strength of everyday and exotic materials.
The event will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. tonight (Nov. 27) at the Claddagh Irish Pub in Geneva Commons, 1702 Commons Drive.

Science Cafes are a new initiative from NIU that invites adults to hear brief, informal talks on cutting-edge research in science, technology, engineering and math and then discuss their questions with STEM experts.
STEM Cafés are free to the public. Throughout the evening, food and drinks will be available for purchase from Claddagh Irish Pub. "Making Stuff Stronger" is a part of a special series of STEM Cafés NIU is presenting which coincide with Public Television’s re-broadcast of the four-part NOVA series “Making Stuff,” which began airing again on Sept. 19.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Haji-Sheikh has a Ph.D. in civil engineering and has worked for leading corporations such as Bell Helicopter, Textron, and Honeywell. He holds 14 U.S. patents and three European patents in the broad area of sensors and mechanics. As an avid cyclist and racer, who is also a materials expert, he will share secrets of the new strength in bicycles used by Olympic champions as well as in newly designed clothing and household tools.
