Ex-Geneva Doctor Sentenced For Possessing 110 Pot Plants

Mark G. Lewis has been sentenced to eight years in prison in the drug case. He still faces sex assault charges as well in Kane County.

KANE COUNTY, IL – A former Geneva doctor has been sentenced to prison for possessing 110 marijuana plants in the basement of his St. Charles home, prosecutors said Friday. Mark G.P. Lewis, 58, of the 0 to 99 block of Squire Lane in St. Charles, pleaded guilty to unlawful possession of cannabis with intent to deliver, a Class X felony, and unlawful possession of a firearm without a Firearm Owners Identification Card, a Class 3 felony, earlier this year. Lewis was sentenced Friday to eight years in prison and was ordered to pay a $137,720 fine.

On May 7, 2015, officers from the North Central Narcotics Task Force served a search warrant at Lewis’ St. Charles home. There they found 110 marijuana plants, more than 11,000 grams of processed marijuana, a handgun and ammunition, Kane County Assistant State’s Attorney Kelly M. Orland said. At the time, Lewis’ FOID card had been revoked.

Meanwhile, Lewis faces sex assault charges in a separate case that is set to go to trial in July.

Those charges came a year before the Lewis' drug arrest. In the sex assault case, he was arrested at his practice in Geneva in June 2014 for accusations he sexually assaulted a woman he knew at his former St. Charles home following a party, according to the Chicago Tribune.

He is charged with aggravated criminal sexual assault, Class X felony, and criminal sexual assault, Class 1 felony.

Lewis has remained in custody since he was arrested in the drug case. Under state law, he is eligible for day-for-day sentencing and will receive credit for 1,029 served in the Kane County jail.
