Geneva Aldermen Discuss BB, Air Gun Restrictions

Aldermen on Monday unanimously agreed to amend the city of Geneva’s weapons ordinance to make it illegal to disarm a firearm in the city unless it is used for self-defense, according to the Kane County Chronicle.

But aldermen separated a second part of the proposed amendment that would make it illegal to shoot off an air or BB gun in the city for future discussions and refinement, according to the article.

Police Chief Steve Mexin proposed the restrictions on BB and air guns, the newspaper reports.

“They are much more powerful than they used to be,” Mexin said. “Many are sold to look like assault rifles … When officers pull up upon a scene, they can’t tell from a distance and can’t assume it is not a real weapon.”
