Geneva Girls' Soccer Team Clinches UEC Title

Varsity wins two of final three to claim River Division crown.

Varsity girls’ soccer finished a strong regular season last week by winning two of three contests and capturing the Upstate Eight River Division championship.

The Vikings officially became champions on Tuesday following an 8-0 demolition of UEC River rival Elgin. It was a total team effort, as Geneva got goals from Catherine Allon, Amanda Lulek, Ally Serra, Jessica Cuiriz, Victoria Fortney, Michaela Loebel, Kailey Rote and Kristin Rodriguez. And it was over early—all eight tallies came in the first half of play.

A Thursday matchup with No. 4 Naperville North turned out quite differently as the Vikings fell 2-1 to the Huskies. Geneva found itself in a 1-0 hole early in the first half, but just minutes later Allon found the back of North’s net to tie the score entering halftime. The Huskies netted the game-winner just two minutes into the second half when a shot by senior Kirsten Anderson was deflected into Geneva’s goal; it was officially scored as an own goal for the Vikings.

Saturday was the Amanda Lulek Show for the Vikings, who headed into the postseason with a 3-0 win over St. Francis. Lulek was involved with all three goals, scoring one of her own and assisting Allon and freshman Hope Goodman.

Geneva finished the 2011 campaign with an overall record of 11-5-4 while going 5-0-1 atop the UEC River Division. They’ll begin IHSA regional action Wednesday against Glenbard East at the Lake Park regional.
