Geneva Vs. South Elgin: 'Best Moment of My Life So Far'

The 2010 victory at Burgess Field was legendary. But what will Saturday hold?

Last year, Geneva beat South Elgin 31-28 with a last-second field goal. OK, it was 1.6 seconds showing, to be exact.

The kicker: Ben Moore.

The quote: "Best moment of my life, so far."

The result: An upset of a highly favored, highly ranked South Elgin team.

The kick also went on to the competition, which for Ben probably should have been named Friday Night Feets. Geneva came in first in its FNF region and won a nice little $2,500, which went to the campaign.

According to BeRecruitted.com, Ben was 6-for-7 in field goal conversions in 2010, thank you very much. This year, Kevin Dunlop has come on as Geneva's field goal and extra-point kicker, following Matt Williams, who began the season in that role but had to give it up because he also plays what I'm told is a very active position called "quarterback" and serves as Geneva's kickoff man and punter.

Who knows if Kevin's Friday-night feet will come into play on Saturday.

That's right, Saturday. Geneva travels away from the friendly confines of Burgess Field to the unknown territory of a brand new South Elgin High School Stadium. The high school is located at 760 E. Main St. South Elgin IL 60177, according to the South Elgin High School website, and the varsity game starts at 1:30 p.m.

The Storm is (are?) 3-4 so far this season and 3-2 in the Upstate Eight Conference. South Elgin is coming off a 52-6 shellacking of East Aurora last week.

The game will be broadcast on WEPS 88.9-FM, according to the Daily Herald, and of course you can tune in to Geneva Patch for bulletins and tweets.

South Elgin coaches weren't very happy about the officiating last season, as I recall, and the Stormy coaching staff is very aware of how important this win is for a team fighting to make the playoffs.

It will be Geneva's biggest challenge this season since the , a loss that will cost me four bottles of Samuel Smith's Nut Brown Ale to the accursed Bulldog partisan Tom Parisi.

We can only hope that Geneva can fill the big shoes of Ben Moore's Friday Night feets.

"A little bit of pressure," Moore said after last year's nailbiter. "But that's the game. It's fun. Live it up!"
