Geneva Woman Pleads Guilty To Killing Husband With Poisoned Smoothie
Julia Gutierrez has been sentenced to 22 years in prison for killing her husband, Eduardo, in their Geneva home.

GENEVA, IL - A 54-year-old Geneva woman has pleaded guilty but mentally ill to killing her husband with a poisoned smoothie. On Thursday, Julia Gutierrez was sentenced to 22 years in prison for the murder of Eduardo Gutierrez in their Geneva home. She slipped six Temazepam pills into Eduardo's smoothie in January 2016 and served the drink to him.
Authorities were called to the couple's home on Jan 28, 2016, where they found Eduardo, who appeared to have been deceased for awhile, in the living room and found Julia, who was semi-conscious, in the bathroom, according to the Aurora Beacon-News.
Prosecutors suggested the case was an attempted murder-suicide and officers said they found a note in Julia's handwriting that stated "I love him so much, please forgive me" and "Hope to see you in heaven,"according to the newspaper.

Eduardo's family was at the hearing on Thursday and his sister described the 53-year-old man as an upbeat and supportive member of their close-knit family, the Aurora Beacon-news reports.
"It sickens us to think Eddie let his guard down. Eddie gave his life for her," Lidia Pyecha, one of Eduardo's five sisters, said on Thursday. "His life was taken way too early."
