How Some Ex-Cougars Are Doing in the Big Leagues This Year
What do Miguel Cabrera, Adrian Gonzalez, Josh Beckett and Nelson Cruz have in common? They're all former Kane County Cougars.
We've had more than a few Major League Baseball players travel through Geneva at the Kane County Events Center, and it's sometimes fun to do a quick recap of how the Cougars alumni are doing.
Here's exactly that, courtesy of the Cougars' Shawn Touney. The statistics here are through games played on June 26.
- A pair of Red Sox and Cougars alumni remain at the top of the leaderboard in two statistical categories. Boston first baseman Adrian Gonzalez (’01) leads Major League Baseball in batting average (.361), hits (114) and RBI (71). Josh Beckett (’00) leads the majors with a 1.86 ERA.
- Rangers outfielder Nelson Cruz (’03) is fifth in the A.L. with 18 home runs and has three dingers in his last five games.
- Detroit infielder Miguel Cabrera (’01) is third-best among A.L. players with a .330 average and is batting .469 in his last 10 games.
- Dodgers outfielder Andre Ethier (’03) is fifth-best in the N.L. with a .317 average.
- Rockies closer Huston Street (’04) is tied with the Giants’ Brian Wilson for the N.L. lead in saves with 23.
