Pot Sales in Geneva: City To Hold Public Hearing

The city council met Monday to discuss allowing pot sales in town once it becomes legal on Jan. 1.

GENEVA, IL — The Geneva City Council decided Monday to have the city's planning and zoning commission first hold a hearing on allowing recreational marijuana sales in town before making a decision, the Daily Herald reports. The public hearing would give local residents a chance to sound off on the issue.

The discussion comes municipalities throughout the suburbs are deciding whether to allow businesses in their towns once marijuana becomes legal for recreational use on Jan. 1.

The city council on Monday did vote in favor of allowing a 3 percent tax on marijuana sales if the city goes forward with allowing pot to be sold in Geneva, the Daily Herald reports. That vote comes a week after the St. Charles City Council voted in favor of implementing the same sales tax on marijuana.
