Route 31 Underpass To Close For Emergency Bridge Repair

Officials said the emergency repair is not related to the ongoing Third Main Line project taking place in Geneva.

The first day of construction will coincide with the final day of Festival of the Vine, so staff are urging drivers to use extra caution if they drive downtown on Third Street.

GENEVA, IL — The Route 31 underpass will close Sunday for emergency repairs to the train bridge, city officials said.

Route 31 will be closed from South Street to Third Street.

The news comes only a few days after the underpass reopened Sept. 1, having been shut down since July 17 while a Union Pacific contractor built abutments, wing walls and other support structures south of the existing train bridge.

Drivers wanting to avoid the construction zone could use Route 25 or Western Avenue, but Union Pacific did not provide city officials with an official detour route, according to a Geneva news release.
