St. Peter Cross Country Closing In On St. Patrick

Missing two runners, St. Peter starts to threaten perennial front runner in 5/6th grade race at Sycamore Park in Sycamore.

In their third conference meet of the season, the St. Peter 5th and 6th graders are finally starting to make some gains on the strong St. Patrick team. In spite of missing two key scorers including repeat front runner Landon O’Donoghue, St. Peter gained precious points with the conference championship just over a week away. More importantly, 6th grader Ben Robertson posed a major threat to the usual front running St. Patrick duo, finishing only seconds out of first place with a strong third place finish. It came down to the sprint at the finish and running on tired legs from Saturday’s muddy Troy Invitational Robertson simply ran out of gas. That probably won’t be the case in a week with a trophy on the line. It won’t be easy, but with 5th grader O’Donoghue back in the mix and some help from the St. Peter’s third, fourth and fifth runners there is the potential for an end of season miracle on St. Peter’s home turf at Wheeler Park in Geneva. Helping out the boys was 6th grader Mary Tork, finishing second overall among the girls and scoring points for St. Peter as the fourth runner in the co-ed scored race. With a possible upset in the making, the championship on October 1 should be a fun one to watch.

In the 7/8th grade race St. Peter won for the third meet in a row. Although the score was a little tighter due to the co-ed scoring St. Peter had a comfortable win beating second place host St. Mary by a score of 40-53. As usual, Will Klaus and Joe Mullaghy, both 8th graders, led the way for St. Peter in 3rd and 4th place. Only 38 seconds separated St. Peter’s third through seventh runners as the team continues to embrace the pack mentality. 8th grader Megan Cahill once again finished third among the girls continuing her streak of top five conference finishes.

On Wednesday the team travels to Hampshire for their last regular season conference meet. On October 1 the trophies are on the line as St. Peter hosts the Tri-County Conference Cross Country Championship Meet at their home field Wheeler Park in Geneva.
