Tough Schedule But a Short Commute for Vikings Football Team This Year

The opposition won't be any easier for the 2011 Viking football team, but the travel time will.

Sorry, just getting warmed up for the fall sports season. Specifically, the football season, which starts Friday, believe it or not.

This year, the farthest a football fan has to travel for any of the first six games—count 'em, six—is St. Charles.

The Vikings finish the regular season with away games against South Elgin and Larkin, but from a purely travel perspective, it's a comfortable commute for all nine games.

All varsity games start (tentatively) at 7:30 p.m. Fridays, except the South Elgin game at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 15.

I will say this: Coach Rob Wicinski likes a challenge. The two pre-season games are against perennial powerhouses Rock Island and Wheaton North. The Rocks are ranked No. 6 in Class 6A and Wheaton North received a number of top 10 votes in Class 7A from the Associated Press.

And the Upstate Eight Conference schedule looks equally hellacious. Hard to imagine playing both St. Charles teams away and returning with two victories, then there's that South Elgin away game near the end of the regular season to look forward to.

As we all know, Geneva finished a great first season in the Upstate Eight in 2010, going undefeated in the conference regular schedule and finishing with an 8-3 record overall.

Here's the schedule for 2011:

Aug. 26 (H) — Rock Island

Sept. 2 (H) — Wheaton North

Sept. 9 (A) — St. Charles East

Sept. 16 (H) — Elgin

Sept. 23 (A) — St. Charles North

Sept. 30 (H) — Batavia

Oct. 7 (H) — Streamwood

Oct. 15 (A) — South Elgin

Oct. 21 (A) — Larkin
