Viking Volleyball Team Starts Season With a Win Over Sycamore

Vikings top Spartans 25-12, 25-16 for 1-0 season start.

The Vikings started off their season against some tough competition, but that didn't stop them from being notching their first win of the 2011 campaign Tuesday at Sycamore.

The Vikings topped the Spartans in straight sets, 25-12, 25-16.

Melissa Hanika set the momentum, starting the match off with consistent and aggressive swings and gaining four kills. Jess Wicinski added to the offense with six kills. Wicinski controlled the ball on offense, putting it where Sycamore’s defense was not.

The Vikings came out looking comfortable and played with confidence. Ashleigh Shain kept the court alive with 18 digs against Sycamore’s offense, and Kelly Dalhiem added to the defense with 12 digs.

Overall, Geneva played smart volleyball and took home a victory for their first match of the season. The Vikings will play West Aurora on Geneva’s homecourt this coming Monday, Aug. 28.
