Layla, a beagle, got more than she bargained for when she bolted from her owner to chase a squirrel near West Chicago on New Year’s Day and became stuck in an underground concrete pipe for nearly 24 hours, the Daily Herald reports.

Her owner, Sandra Dyer of Bartlett, was walking her two dogs in the Sonny Acres Farm at about 2 p.m. when Layla got away. Dryer lost sight of the 50-pound dog and spent the rest of New Year’s Day and Friday searching for the missing pup, according to the newspaper.

On Friday afternoon, Dyer stopped to ask a garbage man if he happened to see her dog when she heard barking coming from ”underneath her” in the area of the Roger’s Flooring store, 27W743 St. Charles Road near West Chicago.

“I ran into the store and we got flashlights and looked into the culvert, and I could see her butt wriggling and her tail wagging,” Dyer told the Daily Herald.

The Carol Stream Fire Department responded and cut through the concrete until they were able to reach Layla’s hind legs and pull her out, the Daily Herald reports. Layla was shaken up and treated for dehydration but is doing fine and recovering at her home in Bartlett.
