College of DuPage Solar Eclipse Viewing Draws Hundreds

Hundreds of College of DuPage students, staff and faculty, as well as members of the community, attended a free safe viewing of the solar eclipse on the College’s Glen Ellyn campus on Aug. 21. Click here to see more pictures of the event.

Guided by COD Astronomy faculty, participants viewed the eclipse safely through a telescope projected onto a monitor and through safe solar filters and binoculars. Despite the overcast day, onlookers were able to glimpse the eclipse, including during peak coverage when the moon blocked approximately 87 percent of the sun. This was the first time parts of the contiguous United States have seen a total eclipse since 1979.
