Cop Rescues Unconscious Woman From Submerged Car

The woman's car plunged into a pond near the College of DuPage on Friday night.

GLEN ELLYN, IL -- A Glen Ellyn police officer came to the rescue of a woman found unconscious in a vehicle that plunged into a pond on the College of DuPage property, 425 Fawell Blvd., Friday night.

Witnesses called 911 at around 8 p.m. Friday after spotting the car completely underwater in a pond on the east side of COD's property, police said.

Officer Kevin Riggle was one of the first to arrive on the scene and swam to the vehicle, which was about 30 yards away from the shoreline, Assistant Chief of Police William Holmer said in a press release Friday.

Riggle found a 61-year-old woman unconscious in the submerged vehicle and pulled her onto the top of the car, which was just below the surface of the water, police said. The woman regained consciousness after being pulled from the car, and firefighters from the Lisle-Woodridge Fire Department helped get her and Riggle back to shore.

Glen Ellyn Police chief Philip Norton praised Riggle's heroic actions, "which undoubtedly saved the woman's life," police said. He also expressed gratitude to firefighters who assisted at the scene.
