Daniel J. Levitin, Author of the #1 Best-Seller "This is your Brain on Music" Speaks at the MAC April 14

COD Professor of Music Tom Tallman Discusses Levitin's Research Techniques in Free MAC Chat Beginning at 6:30 p.m.

The McAninch Arts Center (MAC) located at 425 Fawell Blvd. on the campus of College of DuPage, presents a speaking engagement of Daniel J. Levitin, author of “This is Your Brain on Music,” Tuesday, April 14 at 7:30 p.m. An engaging speaker, Levitin will leave the audience thinking about music, memory and technology in an entirely new way.

Levitin will be the first speaker in the Daily Herald’s Author’s Circle Book Club, a collaboration between the Daily Herald and the MAC. Readers can join the Author’s Circle Book Club for free at events.dailyherald.com.

Dr. Daniel J. Levitin is James McGill Professor of Psychology, Music, and Computer Science at McGill University and Dean of Arts and Humanities at the Minerva Schools at KGI. He is the author of the three consecutive #1 bestselling books “This Is Your Brain On Music,” “The World in Six Song” and his newest book, “The Organized Mind: Thinking Straight in the Age of Information Overload,” released in 2014.

Levitin has published more than 100 scientific articles in leading journals, including Science, Nature, PNAS, Neuron, and Cognition. He is credited with fundamental discoveries about the nature of musical memory and absolute pitch, the neural correlates of musical structure, and the role of the cerebellum in mediating musical emotion. Prior to entering academia, Levitin was a record producer and engineer with artists such as Blue Öyster Cult, Santana, and Stevie Wonder.

A popular public speaker, Levitin has spoken to sold-out audiences of 1,200-5,000 all over the world. He has given keynote addresses for the Glenn Gould Foundation, Kindermusik, California Music Educators, Canadian Music Week, and Brandtrust Advertising Executives. He has given invited lectures to the United States Library of Congress, the Naval Undersea Warfare Center, the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) as well as an invited presentation to the Canadian Ministers of Culture on the future of music and copyright.

Prior to the lecture, College of DuPage Professor of Music Tom Tallman will discuss the exciting research techniques of Dr. Daniel Levitin in the areas of musical cognition, music therapy and the music/wellness connection. This free MAC Chat will begin at 6:30 p.m. in Room 140 of the McAninch Arts Center.
