District 89 Appoints New Superintendent

Emily Tammaru, who currently serves as the assistant superintendent of learning for the school district, will replace John Perdue.

GLEN ELLYN, IL -- Community Consolidated School District 89 has selected Emily Tammaru as its new superintendent.

Tammaru, who currently serves as the assistant superintendent of learning for Community Consolidated School District 89, will replace the current superintendent, John Perdue, when he retire in July. Perdue has been the superintendent for District 89 for the past 11 years.

The District 89 school board approved Tammaru’s appointment during its Feb. 8 meeting. She was selected to replace Perdue after a comprehensive national search conducted by Hazard, Young, Attea & Associates, a national search firm that specializes in superintendent searches.

“Dr. Tammaru’s expertise as an educational leader, passion for learning, and commitment to children make her an excellent choice. Dr. Tammaru also brings a significant understanding of district operations and community that will enable her to effectively lead the District on its path of continuous improvement,” Board President Mike Nelson said.

Tammaru joined the District in 2007 as Principal of Briar Glen Elementary School. She was named the Assistant Superintendent for Learning in 2010 and has led the implementation of many state and federal initiatives with a high level of rigor and support, always focused on what is best for students, according to a District 89 press release.

Working collaboratively with faculty, Tammaru facilitated the development of curriculum aligned to the new Illinois Learning Standards and Next Generation Science Standards. Focused on increasing learning for all, Tammaru has provided leadership for school improvement systems with clear and measurable outcomes. She worked closely with administration and staff in developing a staffing and facilities plan to transition to full-day kindergarten in the 2015-16 school year, which provides students a strong academic foundation.

Prior to assuming a principal’s position in CCSD89, Dr. Tammaru served in administrative and teaching positions in West Aurora School District 129. She earned her doctorate degree in educational administration from Aurora University. She received a bachelor’s degree in the area of special education from Eastern Illinois University and a master’s degree in educational leadership from Aurora University.

During the search for a new superintendent, school board members developed criteria for the ideal superintendent candidate based on extensive input provided by a broad base of stakeholders including parents, teachers, administrators, and community residents.

“After a rigorous recruitment and screening process, the search firm provided the Board with five extremely qualified candidates to interview,” Beth Powers, Board Vice President, said. “The Board unanimously agreed that Dr. Tammaru is best suited to continue to move the District forward and maintain the standard of excellence this board and the community have come to expect.”

The School Board approved a three-year contract with Tammaru, effective on July 1. Upon appointing Tammaru, the school board commended Perdue for serving the district with distinction for the past 11 years.
