Explore Science, Technology, Engineering and Math at Fifth Annual College of DuPage STEMCON April 25

Join College of DuPage for STEMCON, a free, interactive event celebrating science, technology, engineering and math (STEM), from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, April 25, in the Physical Education Arena on the College’s Glen Ellyn campus, 425 Fawell Blvd.

STEMCON features activities, demonstrations and experiments designed to inform, entertain and spark interest in a variety of STEM topics. This year’s offerings highlight a vast array of disciplines including: cybersecurity; computer coding; electricity and magnetism; food security initiatives; LEGO architecture activities; mathematical strategy games; medicinal plants; stormwater management; video game design and development; and robotics.

The event also features Justin Shaifer, founder and executive director of Fascinate, Inc., who will discuss real-life STEM professionals’ experiences and STEM careers during two keynote talks “Why STEM is Dope” at 11 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.
Shaifer is a science communicator, educator and STEM advocate known for his talent for understanding and inspiring Gen Z. His organization, Fascinate, Inc., is a nonprofit that partners with organizations such as Microsoft, Google and the MIT Media Lab to motivate underrepresented students to learn about STEM careers. Currently a science education Ph.D. student at Teachers College of Columbia University, Shaifer earned full scholarships from NASA and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and graduated from Hampton University with a bachelor’s degree in marine and environmental science, earning the department’s highest GPA. Shaifer’s work has been featured in Forbes, Variety and Essence, and he was named a LinkedIn Top Voice in Technology.

Additional STEMCON stage shows and activities include, “Fun with Chemistry,” a weather balloon launch, and guided tours of the College’s prairie restoration and natural areas.
In addition, representatives from COD, as well as a wide range of STEM-based organizations and institutions, including the American Chemical Society, Argonne National Laboratory, Fermilab National Laboratory, Morton Arboretum, NASA and SciTech Museum will be on hand to host activities, provide information and answer questions about education, innovations and careers in the STEM fields.
Refreshments will be available for purchase onsite during the event.
STEMCON is funded pursuant to a grant from the Illinois Community College Board and funded partially through the Strengthening Career and Technical Education for the 21st Century Act (Perkins V).
