Food And Beverage Tax Approved By Glen Ellyn Board

The 1.5 percent tax will go into effect in March 2019.

GLEN ELLYN, IL — The Glen Ellyn Village Board of Trustees approved an ordinance Monday that will add a 1.5 percent food and beverage tax to food and drinks that are prepared at bars and restaurants and liquor that is packaged for at-home consumption. Revenue from the food and beverage tax, which goes into effect on March 1, will be used to fund capital projects in the village, including construction of a new train station and pedestrian underpass.

Village officials expect the tax to generate up to $1.2 million a year, with the revenue strictly designated for capital projects only. These initiatives include renovations to the Glen Ellyn Civic Center and structural improvements to Roosevelt Road.

The ordinance was approved after several open workshops in which village officials met with residents and more than 40 local business owners to get feedback. The ordinance was first read on Sept. 10 and approved on Monday.
