Glen Ellyn American Legion Post 3 and Glen Ellyn Girls Softball Teams Partner for “Honor Flight Chicago”
GEl House Softball and the Phillies Travel Softball Program joined with members of American Legion Post 3 to help send a vet to Wash. DC.

Players from the Glen Ellyn House Softball and the Phillies Travel Softball
Program Partnered with members of American Legion Post 3 to help
sponsor a flight for a senior war veteran through Honor Flight
Chicago (a not for profit organization dedicated to honoring senior
war veterans by flying them all-expense-paid to Washington DC for a
memory of a lifetime!)" The cost to send a veteran to Washington
D.C. from Midway Airport is $1,000 per person. The goal is to
ensure that all veterans have an opportunity to visit the war
memorials that were built in their honor, and be recognized for the
service and sacrifices they made for our country.
Sunday, April 23, the Glen Ellyn Phillies Travel Softball players gathered at
Ackerman Recreation & Fitness Center with members of the American
Legion to build poppies for distribution and donation collection. The
Remembrance Poppy is the traditional symbol of the American Legion
and the official memorial flower for Americans who died in wars since
WWI. The girls were able to produce nearly 400 poppies at this
service event.
On Monday, May 29, at 11:00 AM,
the Glen Ellyn American Legion and Glen Ellyn Girls softball will be at Lake Ellyn Park for
the village Memorial Day service. They will be presenting the people
on the grounds with the poppies and collecting donations for the
Honor Flight Project. Also, during the month of May, the softball
players have been writing Thank You Letters to the veterans.

On June 7, on the return flight to Chicago after the Washington D.C.
events, the veterans will receive and read letters of appreciation
from both family members and volunteers in a traditional “Mail
Call”. To complete the day, contingency legionnaires, and
volunteers will also be on hand at the airport to greet the Honor
Flight recipients on their return.
