GLEN ELLYN, IL -- Glen Ellyn's iconic Giesche shoe store building will ultimately be razed to make way for a new luxury apartment development, but the board's recent decision to approve the project met with immediate resistance. Village board member Mark Senak walked out during the vote, announcing his resignation, Daily Herald reports.
Senak, whose term would have ended in April, a zoning exception that was made to accommodate the five-story development.
The village board voted Monday to approve construction of the Apex 400 development, which will replace the former Giesche site and part of a village-owned parking lot at 418-424 N. Main St.

In addition to 107 luxury apartments, Apex 400 will have more than 8,800 square feet of commercial space. The development will also feature a two-story parking garage with public and residential parking accommodations.
In a statement, Village President Diane McGinley said the development will "eliminate an eyesore on Main Street." The Giesche store, which occupied the corner of Hillside Avenue and Main Street for TKTKTK years, has been vacant since it closed its doors in 2014.
