Glen Ellyn Park District Announces Board Vacancy

Glen Ellyn Park District is seeking candidates to serve as Park District Commissioner. Applications will be accepted until 8pm on Feb. 22.

Glen Ellyn Park District Board Commissioner Gary Mayo has announced his intention to move outside the Glen Ellyn Park District boundaries within the next few months. In anticipation of Commissioner Mayo’s departure, the Glen Ellyn Park District will be seeking candidates to serve as Park District Commissioner for approximately one year until the next Park District Commissioner election which will take place on Tuesday, April 4, 2017.


As part of the process to fill the vacancy, the Glen Ellyn Park District will accept applications of interested candidates through 8:00 p.m. on February 22, 2016. Prospective candidates must complete the application (available online at www.gepark.org) and either email to kdikker@gepark.org, mail to Spring Avenue Recreation Center, 185 Spring Avenue, Glen Ellyn 60137, attention K. Dikker or drop off in person at Spring Avenue Recreation Center.

All applications will be reviewed and selected candidates will be requested to interview. The interviews are tentatively to take place between March 1 and March 11. A recommended candidate will be presented to the entire Board on Tuesday, March 15. On Tuesday, April 12, the candidate will be formally appointed and sworn into office, assuming the role of Park Board Commissioner from that date until April, 2017. The dates prior to appointment are subject to change.

The Glen Ellyn Park District would like to acknowledge the efforts, commitment and dedication to the Park District and community displayed by Commissioner Mayo during his five years in office. First elected in April 2011, he was instrumental in the creation of the Glen Ellyn Park District Citizens’ Finance Committee, a group of Glen Ellyn residents with business and financial experience that volunteers to provide assistance and advice regarding the District’s financial matters. Additionally, Commissioner Mayo provided direction and oversight of the financial operation of the District which led to generating net surpluses which contribute towards maintaining and improving existing assets, creating fund balances, improving the District’s bond rating, developing a business plan for the Ackerman Sports and Fitness Center while formulating long-term financial goals and expectations for the District as a whole. He also was an advocate of athletics including providing direction to support and expand the youth lacrosse program, helped develop the plan to convert Newton Park athletic field to synthetic turf while negotiating a unified shared use agreement with Glenbard High School District 87 as well as contributing to the improvement and maintenance of the entire athletic field inventory. Finally, Commissioner Mayo served terms of Presidency, Vice Presidency, and Treasurer during his five years on the Park District Board.
