Glen Ellyn to Replace Downtown Streetlights from 1980s With LED System
A $25,000 grant helped make the purchase of the new LED streetlights possible.

GLEN ELLYN, IL -- The village of Glen Ellyn will be replacing its downtown lights with more energy-efficient ones.
The village received a $25,000 grant from the Illinois Clean Energy Community Foundation to replace old streetlights to an LED system, according to a village of Glen Ellyn e-newsletter. LED lighting uses 75 percent less energy.
The current streetlights in the downtown area were installed in 1985.

Julius Hansen, public works director, informed trustees the fixtures are near the end of their useful life, and repairs are becoming more difficult. The Sternberg streetlight that was approved is a custom-made LED replica of the existing streetlight that is being used in the downtown.
The replica contains a switch control that can turn off its upper light, making it dark-sky compliant. The village is expected to start switching out its lights on Dec. 1. The new streetlights should be installed by April 1.
