Human West Nile Cases Reported In Naperville, Glen Ellyn

This marks the fourth and fifth people to contract West Nile Virus in DuPage County since Jan. 1.

GLEN ELLYN, IL — Patients in Glen Ellyn and Naperville have contracted the West Nile Virus, according to the DuPage County Department of Health. The diagnoses mark the fourth and fifth human cases of West Nile in DuPage County since Jan. 1, 2019.

The Glen Ellyn case was identified on Sept. 18 and the Naperville case was identified on Sept. 25, according to the Department of Health website.

Summer may be over, but residents are urged to still take preventive action when spending time outdoors. The DuPage County Department of Health recommends the following:

  • Avoid going outdoors during peak mosquito times
  • Use bug spray with at least 30 percent DEET; children ages 2 to 12 should use spray with about 10 percent DEET
  • Wear light-colored clothing that covers your arms, legs, and ankles
  • Use mosquito netting when sleeping outdoors

Standing water in yards should be drained to help prevent mosquitoes. Pet dishes and bird baths should be cleaned regularly to help further protect against West Nile Virus.
