Increase In Coyotes Spotted In Lombard, Village Says

Residents are likely to see more coyotes in fall as the animals get ready for winter.

LOMBARD, IL — An increase in reports of coyote sightings has led the village of Lombard to issue words of warning to residents about encountering the wild animals.

In a post on Facebook, Lombard officials said coyotes are spotted more frequently in autumn as they prep for winter. The animals may be more visible in urbanized areas and can sometimes be seen close to homes.

If you see or encounter a coyote, officials say it is not necessary to report the sighting. If the animal appears to be hurt or ill, residents should contact the Village of Lombard or their own municipality if they do not live in Lombard.

If you do run into a coyote, Lombard's website offers the following tips:

  • Don't run or turn your back
  • Make yourself "as big as possible" and make loud sounds
  • Wave your arms, clap, shout authoritatively
  • Throw small sticks and stones in the coyote's direction (not at the coyote) to scare it
  • Spray the coyote with a hose or with a squirt gun filled with water and vinegar

Remember, never approach a coyote, especially if it is wounded or sick.
