Mosquito Abatement Tax Increase Voted Down In Glen Ellyn

Voters were against a proposal to increase tax funding for mosquito abatement.

GLEN ELLYN, IL --- Glen Ellyn voters turned down a referendum Tuesday that would have used tax dollars to fund mosquito control. According to unofficial results posted by the DuPage County Election Commission, 55.6% of voters rejected the proposal and 44.4% voted in favor of it.

The referendum question proposed a .0044 percent increase in property tax levies for funding. This would have amounted to an annual increase of about $6 for an average homeowner in the mosquito abatement district, according to a press release from District Chairman James L. Ryan Jr.

Since 1992, the mosquito abatement funding rate has been at .0106 percent and is capped at .011 percent, according to the mosquito abatement district website. The district uses these funds to monitor mosquito traps and treat the area for both larval and adult mosquitoes.
