Possibly the greatest interpreter of romantic ballads, Jimmy Scott died June 14, a month short of his 89th birthday. First featured as a singer with Lionel Hampton's big band in the late forties, Scott was repeatedly marginalized, exploited and dismissed by industry music moguls. A broken man, Scott gave up and returned to his native Cleveland to eek out a living as a waiter, dishwasher, nurse's aide and elevator operator. Approaching 60 Scott was miraculously rediscovered in 1984 by a now appreciative industry and has spent the last 30 years enthralling music fans throughout the world. Jimmy was 72 when he brought down the house at a music tribute for Clint Eastwood with his astounding rendition of 'The first time ever I saw your face'.
