GLEN ELLYN, IL — Metra officials say no one was hurt after a traction motor caught fire on an outbound Union Pacific West train near Glen Ellyn Friday morning.

Train #26 halted at the Glen Ellyn Metra station just before 7:30 a.m. when smoke was seen coming from the motor. Emergency crews arrived at the scene shortly after. Passengers were safely evacuated from the train and were able to board the following train.

Metra spokesperson Meg Thomas-Reile told Patch the train had four traction motors, which create propulsion to turn the train's wheels. She said trains can still operate when one motor malfunctions, but today's incident "was indicative of a more serious issue," putting the train out of service.
