Phone Scammers Swindled $4800 From Victims In Glen Ellyn: Cops
A Glen Ellyn resident and a business owner were victims of phone scams. The scammers pretended to be family members and ComEd employees.

GLEN ELLYN, IL — A Glen Ellyn resident and a business owner were victims of separate phone scams that led to nearly nearly $5,000 in losses. The first victim was scammed by an individual who claimed to be a family member who was in trouble. The second victim, who owns a local business, was deceived by someone who claimed to be a ComEd representative.
The first scam happened to a resident in the 900 block of Waverly on Oct. 30 between the hours of 6 a.m. and 8 p.m. Police say the caller told the victim they were a family member and needed emergency financial assistance. The victim purchased multiple Sam's Club gift cards totaling more than $4,000 and gave the caller the codes to activate the cards. According to police the caller cashed the cards. The victim alerted police after discovering the call was a scam.
On Oct. 31, a business owner in the 400 block of Main St. got a phone call from someone who said they were with ComEd and demanded payment for an electric bill. According to police, the victim purchased Green Dot MoneyPak card and gave the caller the activation numbers. The caller then cashed the cards, which totaled $800.
