Prosecutors Pursue Life Sentence For Man Charged In Teen's Murder

Michael R. Jones may face life in prison if he is convicted of the 1985 murder.

GLEN ELLYN, IL — Prosecutors are pushing to get a life sentence for Michael R. Jones, who is charged in the 1985 rape and murder of 15-year-old Kristy Wesselman. Wesselman's body was was found near a path in Glen Ellyn after she went missing on the way home from her high school. The trial for her murder is set to begin in January.

Wesselman's murder case had gone cold for three decades when Michael Jones, 64, was arrested on an unrelated charge of aggravated battery and required to submit a DNA sample. His DNA produced a match with a sample collected after Wesselman's body was discovered.

In the interim, Jones was tied to other sexual assault cases, including a kidnapping from 1977 and the sexual assault of a 7th-grade girl in 1989. The jury will hear evidence from both of these cases at the trial, which is set to start on January 23, Chicago Tribune reports, adding that judge George Bakalis will hear the request for a longer sentence on Nov. 27.
