Research on Gas Station Crime

5 Corners 24/7 Gas Station/Liquor/Convenient store - Crime Research

There was no crime study done on the impact a 24/7 gas station proposed by TrueNorth would have. I did some research on Gas station convenient store crime stats.

  • Center for problem Oriented Policing says 8.3% of robberies occur at Gas stations late-night retail establishments like gas stations, or convenience stores
  • (8.3%) where a gun or weapon is used to force the cashier to hand over the money.
  • The crime of robbery is mainly a nighttime crime, increasing after 8:00 PM and subsiding after 3:00 AM in most areas. Robberies often increase during the winter months because of extended periods of darkness.
  • Dozens of robbery studies have indicated that robbers like isolation, prefer lone victims, good escape routes, and few witnesses in addition to a good cash score. (5 Corners will be prime for this, as there will be no open businesses or homes facing the station after 10p)
  • Convenience store robbery is but one aspect of the larger set of problems related to robbery and to commercial establishments. Although all robbery types share some common features, convenience store robbery warrants special attention because convenience stores have special characteristics. Related problems not directly addressed in this guide, each requiring separate analysis, include
  • Here is a link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uwzj_v0JFa4 This link shows incidents that have happened within the last year or so, at a TrueNorth Gas Station (the company from Ohio who owns over 300 gas stations) - Understandably it's difficult to manage a huge operation like that and manage the hundreds of employees to work 24/7 shifts. Maybe this is why 3 incidents involve their own employees which include a suicide, a heroine overdose, and staged robbery.
  • Voice your opinion at Public Comment about this proposed Gas station at 5-Corners in Glen Ellyn and consider attending the Village Board Meeting on Monday, April 10th @ 7:00PM: Express your requests to Deny a 24/7 Gas station and liquor store that is so close to Forest Glen Elementary School and in residential area. Ask them to please not issue another liquor license, there are only 2 - 24/7 available and they are in use, another permit would need an ordiance to be created
  • Due to the high crime statistics involving gas stations, many states require gas stations and convenience stores which remain open late at night to implement special security measures. Florida has a statute, commonly referred to as the Florida Convenience Store Statute, codified as Sect. 812.171, which requires convenience store owners and gas stations who operate between the hours of 11:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. to prevent foreseeable crimes.
    • Additionally, if a violent crime occurs on the premises of the gas station (rape, murder, robbery, etc.), the Florida Convenience Store statute requires 'enhanced security measures'. Some examples of enhanced security include the hiring of a private security guard, hand pass through windows only at night, etc.
    • Failure to abide by the convenience and gas station security law can result in a $5,000 fine, and violation of this statute can be evidence of liability and negligence in a civil gas station negligent security lawsuit.
