A Snapshot of History Tells About Postcards in Our Lives

On Thursday, May 21, at 7:00 PM in the Glen Ellyn History Center, historian Brian Failing, gives a brief history of postcards, then helps us learn what postcards can tell us about family, political, social, and economic history. He has many wonderful examples of antique and vintage postcards from DuPage County as well as Chicago. Scores of people have sent postcards to family and friends as they have traveled, or saved them in scrapbooks – and still buy them as souvenirs! Congress first approved privately printed cards to be mailed in 1861. The border of a vintage postcard, or its paper content, can help collectors discover the date the card was published. The Curt Teich Postcard Archives, part of the Lake County Discovery Museum, is recognized throughout the world as the largest public collection of postcards.
