St. Petronille’s Youth Ministry has a strong focus on service in the community and beyond. Beginning in 1992 in a place called Neon, Kentucky, we have provided mission opportunities for our teens to serve people who have been affected by natural disasters, poverty or other hardships. Since then we have traveled to Indiana, Kentucky, Mississippi, Missouri, Alabama, Wisconsin, Montana, and Michigan to work over the years. As the teens and adults who accompany them learn about the local culture, develop relationships with the people they serve, and the people they work with, they grow stronger in faith, develop leadership skills and learn to work as a team. Upon returning to Glen Ellyn, we find the teens’ experience leads them to continue doing local service in their schools and communities. Bridge Communities, the Glen Ellyn Resource Center, and the Glen Ellyn Food Pantry are just a few of the recipients of their new- found volunteerism.
For the past 13 years over spring break we have worked in the De La Salle Blackfeet School on the Blackfeet Reservation in Browning, Montana. This is a 4ththrough 8thgrade school that provides a stable, faith based education to the students. Our high school students love working one on one with the children and come away with a new perspective on life on a Reservation, hopefully to continue a life of service. This July we will travel to Browning again to work at the school doing summer maintenance, experiencing an event called “North American Indian Days” and exploring Glacier National Park. It’s quite the cultural experience for them!
