From his early days as a student worker in Marquette University's Service Learning department to his recent appointment as the Associate Dean of Advising and Transfer Services at College of DuPage, Steve Gustis has dedicated his career to advancing student success.

“I’ve always felt drawn to help students explore beyond their boundaries,” he said. “I never knew that working in higher education could do that for me until my job as a student worker pointed me in that direction, and I’ve never looked back. I learn something new from students every day.”

Gustis has worked at COD for more than 20 years in various capacities, including Service Learning Coordinator and Career Services Manager. Most recently, Gustis served as Interim Associate Dean of Counseling, Advising and Transfer Services.

In his new role, Gustis is focused on implementing a case management advising model for diverse student populations.

“This advising model is crucial for student success and the ongoing effectiveness of guided pathways systems,” he said. “It ensures that every student has both a dedicated advisor and a clear educational plan. When students have a personal connection within the College, they are more likely to succeed, especially when they need additional support.”

COD Assistant Provost of Student Affairs Diana Del Rosario praised Gustis’ commitment for improving student retention and completion.

“Steve brings an understanding of the challenges faced by our students and has a deep commitment to COD’s mission,” she said. “His knowledge and leadership have already made an impact on adding capacity for student support and we are excited to see how he will continue to elevate our student services in this new role.”

Gustis earned his bachelor’s degree in Social Work from Marquette University and a master’s degree in Nonprofit Management from Spertus College. He is currently pursuing an Ed.D. from St. Francis University.

Gustis has a robust background in volunteer leadership and board service, including roles as president of the DuPage Association of Volunteer Administration, board chairman for the Parents Alliance Employment Project and the Nonprofit Steering Committee for Giving DuPage. Additionally, Gustis served as an elected member and president of the Woodridge District 68 School Board.

“I have a deep-rooted history in community service, having grown up with a family dedicated to it,” he said. “Transitioning to a school board member was a significant step, but one for which I am very grateful. It allowed me to represent my community and provided valuable insights that enhanced my role working with college-aged students.”

Looking forward, Gustis is eager for the completion of the Student Services Center renovation which includes a one-stop-shop for students and features a new transfer center.

“The newly configured Student Services Center is going to help students tremendously as they navigate student support services,” he said.

Gustis said that his vision moving forward at COD is simple.

“If you focus on what's best for the student, you're going to do what is right every single time,” he said.
