Police are encouraging residents to stay vigilant amid an increase in ruse burglaries in and around Glen Ellyn.
GLEN ELLYN, IL — Glen Ellyn police are urging residents to stay vigilant amid a surge in ruse burglaries in and around the village. In a recent social media post, the Glen Ellyn Police Department shared tips about what residents can do to prevent this type of burglary.
In ruse burglaries, suspects often pose as someone who works for a government utility, a landscaping company or other service, according to the post. When the burglars, they may try to lure the resident outside or distract them while another burglar enters the home to remove items. Police say elderly residents are often targeted in these crimes.

Glen Ellyn police recommend the following tips to protect yourself against being the victim of a ruse burglary:
- Don't let anyone in your house without having scheduled an appointment
- Ask workers for identification
- Contact employers for verification
- Do not leave doors unlocked or the leave the house unattended while speaking with workers
- Pay attention to details that include the clothes workers are wearing, their appearance and the vehicle they are driving
Police recommend sharing these tips with friends and relatives, especially elderly people, who are often targeted by ruse burglars.
