Synthetic Pot Seller Gets Home Confinement For Man's Fatal Crash

Ruby Mohsin pleaded guilty in 2017 to selling synthetic pot marketed as "potpourri" to a man who fatally crashed after using it.

GLEN ELLYN, IL --- A federal judge has sentenced a Glen Ellyn woman to home confinement for her role in the 2011 death of an Aurora man to whom she sold synthetic marijuana branded as "potpourri." Ruby Mohsin pleaded guilty in 2017 to conspiracy to sell a misbranded controlled substance, which the victim, Max Dobner, used before fatally crashing his car at the intersection of Route 31 and Mooseheart Road, Daily Herald reports.

Mohsin's six months of home confinement comes after she served 95 days in jail for a 24-month sentence that was later vacated in 2018. The judge who ruled on Mohsin's case said that she seemed to have demonstrated remorse.

Dobner bought the substance from Mohsin in June 2011 at her cigar store in the Fox Valley Mall. Authorities say Dobner smoked the synthetic marijuana, which Daily Herald said was "marketed as potpourri or incense for masking cigar ash smells," in the mall parking lot and then drove in a panicked state before crashing his vehicle.

Janice Smith, a Winfield woman who had testified for the prosecution, alleged that she had informed Mohsin months prior to Dobner's death that the "potpourri" she sold contained synthetic marijuana, which could be harmful.

Dobner's mother also said at the hearing that Mohsin kept selling the substance at her store after Dobner's fatal accident. His mother told the judge she did not believe Mohsin was remorseful, saying, "I'm talking about this horrendous death instead of remembering his beautiful life."
