Village Plants Arbor Day Tree To Honor Essential Workers

In honor of Arbor Day, and in recognition of its continued Tree City USA membership, the Village of Glen Ellyn’s Public Works Department has planted a tree to honor essential workers everywhere.

As Arbor Day celebrates the importance of trees, it is only fitting that the Village plant a tree near the Glen Ellyn Police Station at the adjacent Panfish Park. The tree planted this year is a Swamp White Oak.

“We are proud to dedicate this tree to all of the essential workers everywhere during the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Julius Hansen, Glen Ellyn Public Works Director. “The tree this year is the perfect reminder that especially during tough times, we are stronger when we come together as a community.”

The Village of Glen Ellyn has been designated as a Tree City USA member for 36 years. The Tree City USA program, established in 1976, is sponsored by the Arbor Day Foundation in partnership with the U.S. Forest Service and the National Association of State Foresters. To be designated as a Tree City USA, communities must meet four core standards of sound urban forestry management: maintaining a tree board or department, having a community tree ordinance, spending at least $2 per capita on urban forestry and celebrating Arbor Day.
