Caller Pretends To Be Cop, Scams Resident Of $4K: Glenview PD Blotter

The caller told the resident they had missed a jury summons, according to police.

GLENVIEW, IL — The following information comes from the Glenview Police Department (unless otherwise noted) and court records as a record of police activity, including incidents reported by the public and those arrested by police. Criminal charges represent accusations by the state and are often dropped or reduced. Updated information may be available from the Cook County Clerk of the Circuit Court.

Every person arrested is presumed innocent unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.

ARRESTS

VIOLATION OF AN ORDER OF PROTECTION

Norman Tovillo, 29, of the 9300 block of Greenwood Road, is accused of violation of an order of protection, and was arrested at 10:35 p.m. July 7, at the Evanston Police Department following an investigation into an incident that occurred in the 1400 block of Elmwood Avenue. Tovillo was held in custody for a detention hearing at Skokie Courthouse.

Malcolm Cole, 34, of the 900 block of Long Road, is accused of speeding (26 mph over), no insurance, and was arrested at 11:05 p.m. July 7, following a traffic stop in the 1200 block of Lehigh Avenue. Cole was released and assigned a court date of Aug. 8.

INCIDENTS

CRIMINAL DAMAGE

  • A resident in the 2100 block of Rugen Road reported at 8:25 a.m. July 2, finding a racial slur engraved on their mailbox. They had last checked their mail on June 30 and there was no writing.
  • A resident in the 2100 block of Chandler Lane reported on July 5, someone had damaged the front and the back driver’s side windows of their vehicle while it was parked at a business in the 1500 block of Wagner Road between 9 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. July 3. The incident is possibly related to a burglary to vehicle report.
  • A resident of the 4600 block of Locust Lane reported at 1:42 July 7, hearing a loud noise outside the residence in the evening on 07/06/2024. When they went outside today, they found the bottom half of their screen door kicked in. A neighbor’s video surveillance shows three younger males walking on the sidewalk of Locust. One of the subjects runs up to the screen door and kicks it with both feet, then all run away.
  • A resident of the 1700 block of Maplewood Lane reported at 6:17 p.m. July 8, seeing a silver sedan, with a black hood, pass a residence in the 1700 block of Maplewood Lane. There was smoke coming from the passenger side of the vehicle, where they saw a male with a blue shirt. There was an explosion and the vehicle left westbound. It appears the person lit a firework in the parkway, which left a patch of the grass damaged.

SUSPICIOUS INCIDENT

  • A Tulip Tree Court called police at 11:08 a.m. July 2, to report receiving an email to their iCloud account that said a software called Pegasus was installed on their computer, which gave them access to everything on the computer. The email stated they have footage of them watching pornography. The email stated that they would need to pay $1,250, so the video did not get released to family and friends. They did not send money and brought the computer to Apple to verify Pegasus had not been installed.
  • A resident of the 3800 block of Springdale Avenue called police at 3:52 a.m. July 4, to report a male on a bicycle had pulled into the driveway and grabbed the driver's vehicle door handle, which was locked. The male then continued westbound on Bette Lane. The male can be seen on Ring video and is described as between 40 to 50 years of age, short hair, wearing dark-colored pants and a light shirt.

BURGLARY TO VEHICLE

A resident of the 2000 block of Chestnut Avenue called police at 11:30 a.m. July 2, to report someone had entered their vehicle while it was parked at the residence. The vehicle appeared to be ransacked, but they do not know if anything was taken.

IDENTITY THEFT

A Norwich Court resident reported at 10:34 a.m. July 3, someone had used their Chase credit card for an unauthorized purchased at Walgreens, 2871 Pfingsten Road, for $536.81 on Feb. 19.

BURGLARY FROM VEHICLE

A resident of the 3600 block of Central Road called police to report that between 9:45 a.m. and 11:20 a.m. July 3, the rear passenger window of their vehicle had been smashed while it was parked at a business in the 1500 block of Wagner Road. A purse was taken from the rear passenger floorboard, which contained three credit cards and a driver’s license.

TRESPASS WARNING

Employees of a business in the 2200 block of Fir Street reported at 6:27 p.m. July 3, patrons arguing. They had calmed down and apologized to each other prior to police arrival. All were given trespass warnings by the business not to return.

THEFT

  • A Bellwood Lane resident reported at 1:16 p.m. July 4, wishing a musician happy birthday on social media. They then received a message from “Integrated Controls Management” who claimed to be the musician’s agent. Through weeks of text conversation, they told them that they could have a VIP visit from Gatwood at their residence. They instructed them to send $2,500 via Bitcoin at Bitcoin machine in the 9700 block of Milwaukee Avenue. They later learned it was a scam when they saw the musician was on a European tour.
  • A Swainwood Drive resident reported at 4:24 p.m. July 8, receiving a phone call from the Glenview Police Department at 1:38 p.m. hours telling them they missed their jury summons and are subject to criminal or civil actions. They told the male caller that they would like to proceed civilly and he said they would have to pay a fine. They sent the caller $4,000 via PayPal. The caller then told them to go to Jewel, 2775 Pfingsten and convert $1,000 to cryptocurrency. They went to Jewel and saw a sign on the Coinstar machine warning of possible scams. They realized it was a scam and ended the phone call.

RETAIL THEFT

  • An employee of a business in the 1900 block of Tower Drive reported at 3:18 p.m. July 4, two males had entered the store at the south doors and asked for a white pair of Nike Air Force One shoes. They were given the box and then walked past the register, out the south doors, without paying for the shoes. They were seen leaving in a white Kia Optima. They were described as between 20 to 25 years of age blacks, about 5-foot-10. One was about 200 pounds, with black hair in mini twists, wearing a black hoodie, white t-shirt, skinny jeans, and black shoes with a white bottom trim. The second male was about 250 pounds, wearing a grey hoodie, skinny jeans, and black shoes with white bottom trim. Total loss $114.
  • An employee of a business in the 1200 block of Milwaukee Avenue called police at 12:23 p.m. July 5, to report a Mount Prospect resident took a Le Creuset Magnetic Wooden Trivet ($49.95) and left the store without paying for the item. The business did not wish to sign complaints but wanted the item back and the person trespassed. Officers spoke with the person, who admitted stealing the trivet, which they later returned to the store. They were issued a trespass warning.

DISORDERLY CONDUCT

  • An employee of a business in the 300 block of Waukegan Road reported at 10:41 a.m. July 5, receiving an email from a customer. The email address the customer’s displeasure with the business’ outside parking arrangements. They used profane and vulgar language toward the employee. The employee said the customer was provided medication for their cat and was asked not to return to the business. They did not want the police to issue the customer a trespass warning.
  • A Deerfield resident called police at 9:22 p.m. July 7, to report being involved in a road rage incident on Willow Road at Landwehr Road, in which a vehicle cut them off and prevented them from changing lanes multiple times. At the traffic light, the driver of the other vehicle exited and approached the complainant’s car saying, "what (expletive)," then punched the driver’s window twice, before returning to his car. No damage was done, but the incident was recorded on an in-car camera. The driver had red short hair, bearing a gray shirt, blue pants, and white shoes. Officers were unable to make contact with the driver.

ASSAULT

Police responded to the 1100 block of Castillian Court at 10:18 p.m. July 6, where a resident reported being in a verbal dispute with a neighbor regarding a dog. A relative joined the argument and lunged at the resident while they were recording the interaction but they did not make physical contact. The relative of the neighbor was issued a Village Ordinance citation for assault.

COMMERCIAL BURGLARY

The owners of a business in the 600 block of Milwaukee Avenue reported at 7:05 a.m. July 7, receiving a motion alarm at 12:22 a.m., but did not contact the police department. They watched surveillance video in the morning and saw a male enter the unlocked east side door and walk to the cash register, which was unlocked. He took $230 and left the building. The person was wearing all black clothing, a baseball cap and white gym shoes. They suspect an ex-employee that was fired for stealing money.

BATTERY

A Park Ridge resident reported at 7:24 p.m. July 8, being involved in a verbal altercation at a park in the 1000 block of Zenith Drive, two Glenview residents over the family entering the gate without scanning their membership. One of the Glenview residents spat on the Park Ridge resident during the incident. They were issued a village ordinance citation for battery.
