Glenview Student Volunteers In Panama, Making A Lasting Impact
Four students from Hofstra University's Physician Assistant program spent their summer break giving back to those in need. They volunteered with Global Brigades in Panama, where they provided healthcare services to underserved communities. Jennifer Keth from Quaker Hill, CT, and Jenna Kim, from Glenview, were two of the students who shared their experience.
Kim found her experience with Global Brigades to be profoundly rewarding. Kim's decision to volunteer was driven by her twin passions for traveling and medicine. "I thought it would be an amazing way to experience a new culture, meet new people, and provide care to those who have limited access to healthcare resources," Kim shared.

For Kim, the most impactful aspect of the trip was witnessing the determination of the patients they served.
"The sheer number of people we interacted with in the clinic, many of whom came on foot and/or traveled a significant distance to come see us, was incredible, Kim added. "They didn't care how long they had to wait outside in the heat; they still showed so much gratitude."

Both Keth and Kim found that their time in Panama provided valuable lessons that will serve them well as they continue their studies. Keth particularly appreciated the opportunity to practice her Spanish, which will be useful in her future career as a PA in the United States. Kim, meanwhile, noted that learning about the differences between healthcare systems in Panama and the U.S. could inspire a future research topic.
As they look back on their time in Panama, both students cherish the memories they made. Keth fondly recalls interacting with patients in the triage area and the simple joy of handing out stickers to children after their visits. Kim's favorite memory was working alongside a doctor to diagnose patients and develop treatment plans, a hands-on experience that deepened her passion for medicine.
Dean Renee McLeod-Sordjan, Hofstra Northwell School of Nursing and Physician Assistant Studies, expressed immense pride in the students' dedication. "It's truly inspiring to see our students choose to spend their summers helping others, especially in communities with limited access to health care," she said. "Their commitment to service reflects the values we strive to instill in all of our students, and I am proud of the impact they're making both locally and globally."
For both Keth and Kim, their summer with Global Brigades was more than just an opportunity to volunteer, it was a chance to grow as healthcare professionals and make a real difference in the lives of those they served.
