Joel Reyes has experience as a cop for 28 years, is a U.S. Army veteran and is working to secure our schools.

GLENVIEW, IL — The District 225 Board of Education approved the hiring of Joel Reyes, the first to hold the newly created position of district safety and security manager. Reyes will coordinate with school and district leadership to improve security and safety.
“The safety of our students and staff is our highest priority and the hiring of Mr. Reyes will allow us to maintain a constant focus on safety and security,” said Superintendent Dr. Mike Riggle, according to a release.
Reyes is well-credentialed. He has 28 years of experience as a cop with the Northbrook Police Department. He was a commander for the past seven years and has been the department's designated emergency manager, the release says. Reyes was also a chief warrant officer in the U.S. Army and holds master's degrees in legal studies and public administration.

“Recent events in the U.S. and abroad are reminders of how security and safety must adapt to contemporary standards,” said Reyes, according to the release. “In a school setting, we must act as advocates for the student population.”
The district has been taking steps recently to bolster security, like assessing building security, revising crisis plans and participated in scenario-based crisis training.
