Glenview Park District Referendum Approved

Voters favored the $17 million bond issue by a nearly 2-1 margin.

GLENVIEW, IL — Glenview voters approved a $17 million bond issue referendum to support park district projects. The money will pay for a plan to renovate the Glenview Ice Center, improve facilities at the Grove and purchase open space.

With 45 of 46 precincts reporting, nearly 65 percent, or 7,705, of votes were in support of the referendum with more than 35 percent, or 4,230, votes against.

The Glenview Park District released a statement welcoming the approval of the bond measure. It thanked members of a citizens task force that helped shaped the proposal over several months last year.

“We are grateful to our taxpayers for their support of this important funding measure," Executive Director Mike McCarty said. "The end result will be recreation facilities that are safer and more secure, energy efficient, more accessible for persons with disabilities and positioned to better meet the needs of our district residents for generations to come.”

All spending from the bond issue will be publicly disclosed on the district’s website as the district moves forward with construction plans, the statement said.

Former Glenview Park Board Commissioner Judy Beck told the Journal & Topics that the vote marks the end of the first phase of a multi-step plan to protect the park districts most treasured assets.

“Phase two begins with a Glenview community more aware of our many special assets and the opportunity for continual public involvement as volunteers in the many ice committees and Grove Heritage Association," Beck said.

Park district officials estimate the total cost to complete all three projects at more than $33 million and the estimated tax impact to be an extra $35.69 in property tax for an average, half-million dollar Glenview home.

Deputy Executive Director Katie Skibbe told Pioneer Press the three projects will be funded with the $17 in bonds provided from the referendum, $10 million from other bonds and $6.1 million in current funds and potential donations.
