Glenview Memorial Day Parade 2018, Plus What's Open And Closed

Check out what's happening during the three-day weekend in Glenview and take a moment to remember the fallen.

GLENVIEW, IL — Memorial Day weekend combines the official kickoff to summer with a chance to honor those veterans of the armed forces, including those who have given the ultimate sacrifice in service of the United States. Since the tradition began 150 years ago to commemorate those who died in the Civil War, the federal holiday has evolved into a time for cookouts, parades and weekend getaways.

Here's what's open, closed and going on in Glenview on Memorial Day 2018:

Veterans Ruck March
This annual event raises awareness of the prevalence of post-traumatic stress disorder and suicide among the nation's veterans. The march from Glencoe to Lake Shore Drive on Friday commemorates and honors those who have been lost at home as well as on the battlefield. (Find out more, or register.)

Glenview Memorial Day Parade and Ceremony
The annual parade and ceremony will begin at 10 a.m. from the corner of Grove and Depot streets in downtown Glenview. It will head east on Grove to Pine Street before heading south to Glenview Road and east to the Veterans Memorial at the intersection of Glenview Road and River Drive.

Speakers will include Joseph M. Sesterhenn American Legion Post 166 Commander John Wowk and Village President John Patterson The parade Marshall will be Jim Douglas, a member of the post for 60 years, and the winner of a Boy Scouts essay contest will appear as a guest speaker.

Government Buildings

  • The Glenview Public Library will be closed Sunday and Monday.
  • Non-essential public employees will have the day off.
  • Postal service will not be available.

Transportation

  • CTA will run on a weekend schedule.
  • Metra will begin offering free rides to children through Labor Day.

Business

  • Most supermarkets will be open, though some, like Costco, give their employees the day off.
  • Banks and financial markets will be shuttered for the day.
  • Many retailers offer special Memorial Day sales and deals for veterans.

Services

  • No rubbish or recycling collection will take place Monday. All trash, yard waste and recyclables will be picked up one day later than normal, with Friday pickups delayed until Saturday.
