MLK Day 2018: What's Open, What's Closed In Glenview

GLENVIEW, IL — Martin Luther King, Jr. Day will be marked Monday across the country. It's the 32nd year a federal holiday honoring the slain civil rights leader has been observed.
While many in Chicagoland will still have have to work, most schools and government offices will take a break. Plus, many community events are being held to mark the occasion.
Here’s what you can expect to find open and closed in Glenview on Martin Luther King Jr. Day:

- Schools: Schools will be closed.
- Glenview Public Library: The library will remain open Jan. 15.
- Banks: Most bank branches will be closed.
- Government: Most government offices will be closed.
- U.S. Postal Service: Post offices will be closed and there will be no mail delivery.
- Garbage Pickup: Refuse collection will not be affected by the holiday.

The group Friends of the Chicago River is organizing a day of service at Blue Star Memorial Woods in Glenview. The free event runs from 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. All ages are welcome but children must be accompanied by an adult. Attendees will help restore the woods by removing invasive trees, followed by a community bonfire with marshmallows. Organizers requested those interested register online.
Glenview United Methodist Church and Northbrook United Methodist Church are coordinating a day of volunteering and service projects for ages 5-105. It includes participation from a variety of North Shore organizations and events begin at 8:30 a.m.:
Bernie’s Book Bank: Facilitates the collection, processing and redistribution of new and gently used children’s books to significantly increase book ownership among at-risk infats, toddlers and school-age children throughout Chicagoland. Volunteer from 9:15 to 11:30. Located at 917 North Shore Drive, Lake Bluff. 847-780-7323
The Boulevard: Provides a healing environment and resources to help ill and injured homeless adults restore their health, rebuild their lives and regain self-sufficiency. Maximim group is 8 and you must be at least 14 years of age. You will cook and serve a meal and play bingo with the residents.Leave church and carpool at 8:30 am, returning to church by 2:00 pm. Wings Warehouse collects and sorts clothing for their retail stores that serve those in need. Here you will be sorting clothing and children must be 10 years old. Between 10 and 13 requires an adult be with them. Work as many hours as you like from 9 am to 5 pm. Located at 1265 Oakton Street, Elk Grove Village.
Feed My Starving Children provides meals for malnourished children in third world countries. We can take up to 40 people who will pack meals. This is fast paced, family friendly and team oriented. Minimum age of 5 and please, no jewelry. Individuals with specific foor allergies may not be able to work here.Work from 2:20 to 4:30 at 1072 National Parkway, Schaumburg, 847-519-9614.
Service Projects at Northbrook United Methodist Church
Dog treats: Providing healthy treats for dogs at Orphans of the Storm. We will use dough for dog biscuits, rolling it out, cutting it with cookie cutters and baking them. This is lots of fun for all ages and fills up fast. We can take up to 25.
Military Bracelets: We will make survival bracelets for the military using Paracord. We will be weaving to make bracelets. Most appropriate for ages 9 and older. We can take up to 10.
Place-mats for Meals-on-Wheels: Decorate place-mats for local elderly to brighten up their meals. Activity is coloring and decorating and we can take up to 20.
Project Linus: We will make blankets for critically ill children. This activity includes cutting and tying fleece fabric into knots. We can take up to 20 and request that you bring a sharp pair of scissors to use. (please label with your name)
Love and Peace Project: We will be painting flower pots and planting tulip bulbs for delivery to people in our community later in the spring.
Baskets for Mary Lou’s Place: We will fill gift baskets and write cards for residents at Mary Lou’s Place, a battered women’s shelter in Evanston.
Community Art Creation: With the guidance of a local artist, we will all have a chance to participate in creating an outdoor art piece that will rotate out to participating churches for display. All ages are welcome, you only need to know how to color with a crayon.
