Suburban ATM Skimming Trio Includes 2 Glenview Men: Police

They allegedly placed "numerous" devices on ATMs in the suburbs to steal card numbers and PINs.

GLENVIEW, IL — Two Glenview residents were among a trio of men arrested at home last week following a four-month investigation into so-called ATM skimmers found in various Chicago suburbs. Dorin Marchidan, 47, and Adrian Popa, 48, both of the 10000 block of Michael Todd Terrace, along with Alin Doina, 48, of the 1800 block of Pebble Beach Circle in Elk Grove Village, were arrested Nov. 1 at their homes and charged with operating a continuing financial crimes enterprise, police said.

People started reporting cash was disappearing from their bank accounts back in June, as the hidden skimming devices stole debit card numbers and PINs, police said.

More than $25,000 was lost in multiple cash transactions as a result of information stolen from just one of the devices, according to police.

Police said the same suspects were seen committing similar crimes in other suburbs, including Wilmette, where a skimming device was found to have been placed at the North Shore Community Bank in August. Wilmette Police Chief Kyle Murphy confirmed the arrests were related to the incident.

Naperville police led the investigation, along with police in Wilmette and Carol Stream, the Secret Service and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement all participated in the investigation, which uncovered "numerous" skimmers in various suburbs, according to Naperville Police Cmdr. Lou Cammiso.

According to the office of the DuPage County Sheriff, Popa was released on $15,000 bond, Doina's was released on a $10,000 bond and Marchidan remains in jail in lieu of a $30,000 bond.

If convicted, the three men face possible sentences of up to 15 years in prison and fines of up to $25,000.

Their next court appearance has been scheduled for Nov. 14.

Police reminded the public to use caution when using ATMs and to call police immediately if they spot any unusual-looking equipment placed in or around the card reader slot.
