Grayslake Man Fatally Shot by Police Officer Had LSD in His System: Coroner

Michael Musson also had contusions and abrasions on his face following the Sept. 2 shooting, which has been ruled a homicide.

LAKE COUNTY, IL -- A 22-year-old Grayslake man who was shot and killed by a veteran Round Lake Police Department officer last fall had LSD in his system at the time of the shooting, the Lake County News Sun reports.

A Lake County Coroner's report also showed Michael Robert Musson, 22, suffered four gunshot wounds and had abrasions and contusions on his face and forehead following the Sept. 2 shooting, according to the newspaper. The 12-year-old veteran Round Lake Police Department officer who shot him was placed on paid administrative following the fatal shooting.

The Lake County Major Crime Task Force into the shooting, which has been ruled a homicide by the coroner's office, is working to finish up its investigation with plans to hand its reports over the Lake County State's Attorney's Office for further review, the Lake County News-Sun reports.

Michael Robert Musson, 22, who lived near where the shooting occurred in Round Lake, was pronounced dead at the scene of the shooting, which happened shortly after 11 p.m. on Sept. 2.

Police said Musson confronted the female officer with a shard of glass in hand when she first arrived on scene in the 0 to 100 block of North Magillis Drive in Round Lake. Police responded after receiving more than one report of the man, who was later identified as Musson, banging on doors in the area, according to an earlier report in the Lake County News Sun and police reports. He also reportedly tried to force his way into at least one home.

The police officer arrived on scene and found Musson who confronted her β€œwith a shard of glass,” said Christopher Covelli, spokesman for the Lake County Major Crime Task Force, in an e-mail response. A physical struggle followed between the police officer and Musson. During the struggle, the officer discharged her firearm and Musson was shot, according to police.

Round Lake Police Department officers attempted life-saving measures on Musson but were not able to revive him. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The officer was taken to a local hospital for non-life threatening injuries. She has been placed on paid administrative leave, Round Lake Chief of Police Michael Gillette said in an e-mail response.

β€œShe has never been involved in a similar event,” Gillette said.

The Lake County Major Crime Task Force has been investigating any criminal wrongdoing, according to the Lake County News Sun. Once the task force has completed its investigation, the Round Lake Police Department will conduct an internal investigation into the shooting.

"The internal investigation will seek to determine whether any departmental rules were violated," Round Lake Police Chief Michael Gillette said.

Musson does have a history of violent behavior directed at police. In 2013, he was charged with aggravated battery to a police officer after he put a detective, who was responding to a possible drug trafficking report in Grayslake, in a headlock when the detective attempted to arrest him, according to the Daily Herald.

Three other people kicked and punched the detective and two backup deputies were also punched several times, according to the article. Musson was pepper sprayed and all four involved in the battery were arrested while three officers were treated at a hospital.
