Holy Cross Anglican Church in Lake Villa announces Lenten events

Seekers welcome to explore a middle way between Protestant and Catholic traditions

Holy Cross Anglican Church in Lake Villa invites the community to attend Lenten programs on Wednesday evenings and Sunday mornings from Feb. 26 through April 8 at the church, located at 500 Park Ave., Suite 102 in Lake Villa

On Ash Wednesday, Feb. 26 at 6:30 p.m., the church hosts a service that marks the start of Lent. The traditional, six-week period of prayer, self-discipline and reflection is based on Jesus Christ’s 40 days of fasting in the desert prior to beginning his public ministry. Attendees on Ash Wednesday will have the option to take part in the ancient imposition of ashes, in which a simple cross—made from the ashes of burned palm leaves—is gently drawn on one’s forehead as a sign of mortality and repentance.

The Lenten journey continues on subsequent Wednesdays, from 6:30-7:30 p.m., until April 8. Each week includes a very short walk along the church’s interior Way of the Cross, pausing briefly at each of 14 images depicting Jesus on the way to his crucifixion. Each of the weeks introduces a variety of ways to pray that you are welcome to try, ranging from contemplating artwork to holding prayer stones to listening to soothing spiritual music.

Additionally, on Sunday mornings from March 1 to April 5, there will be a Lent-themed Bible study at 11 a.m., following the 9:30 a.m. service and coffee social. “Holy Cross is a friendly community where people can take a break from a noisy world and find Jesus present through prayer, worship and fellowship,” said Betsy Crist, senior warden. “We pray that through this Lenten program, you will meet Jesus in a special way and discern his plans for your faith journey.”
