In the midst of a busy holiday weekend, members of the Saint Gilbert 5th Grade Girls Basketball team and their families made the effort not just to give thanks but to actually give back for Thanksgiving.

The team volunteered at the Feed My Starving Children facility in Libertyville, Illinois. Feed My Starving Children is a Christian non-profit committed to feeding God’s children who are hungry in body and in spirit. At their site, children and adults hand-pack meals specifically formulated for malnourished children, and ship these meals to distribution partners around the world.

Together, in concert with other volunteers, the girls helped pack 290 boxes of food which will feed 172 children for a year. According to the charity, it was the 3rd highest box total packed in a 2-hour session in the history of the facility. The girls showed tremendous teamwork and passion while doing such a remarkable job for a worthy cause.

They were not alone. Earlier in the month, Saint Gilbert’s 1st Grade Daisy Scouts also contributed their time and desire to help at Feed My Starving Children’s facility as well.

These acts of service are the core of the Catholic fabric of Saint Gilbert School. The school’s motto, Called to Teach, Serve, Believe, demonstrates that service to others should be the centerpiece of our lives. Throughout the year, classes at all grade levels pack lunches for distribution at a local food shelter. Older students work at the PADS facility in Grayslake, cooking meals and setting up sleeping facilities for the homeless. These are just of few of the ways Saint Gilbert students give back to their community.
